 A Little About Me

Hi, my name is Lily Condra. I am a student of South Lyon East High School. I am a part of the schools Marching band, Winter Guard, and National Honor Society. I will attend Grand Valley in the fall where I will study engineering. I will also be a part of their Honors college where I will be continuing my education. Acceptance into the Honors college has come from my high achievement in school including  getting principals list each year which requires a 3.5 GPA and no marking period grades below a C. I have also managed to keep a 3.92 GPA  with all of my hardest classes including AP chemistry, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, and AP Physics. Through my life I have always had the drive to work hard and do good in my favorite classes which are math and science based. I also have three sisters which have each pushed me to become a better person. They have helped and shaped me into the person I am today.

  • Awards

    • Academic letter- Four years. To receive this award you have to get above a 3.5 GPA.

    • Honor Roll-  Four years. To get honor roll you have to get at least a 3.0 GPA, and have no classes with grades less than a C-.

    • Principals List- Three years. For this award you have to have a GPA of 3.5 and no class grades lower than a B-.

in this essay I talk about the book One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, and the movie Finding Dory. It compares how we have treated the mentally ill through the years, and what the growth in the community has been.

In this essay I discuss the pros and cons of switching schools from paper to E-books. This also includes the personal benefits of switching to E-books.

This is a lab report is from my AP Physics class. It uses the common kinematic equations to find the distance that we should start the buggy if we drop an object from a specific height and want it to land in the buggy. This lab report shows examples of using basic physics equations to solve for the distance away the buggy will need to be.

This is another lab from my AP Physics class, it is using the Atwood's machine to find the value of gravity. This lab uses Newtons second law F=ma to find the acceleration and then find the value of gravity where you are.

in this AP Physics lab we use coffee filters and find the constants needed in the equation for drag force. This lab we also find the terminal velocity of the coffee filters.

  • Color Guard- I have been the section leader for the color guard section in marching band for the past three years. I have been a part of this group for the past four years and it has helped me grow as a person and taught me leadership skills.

  • Winter Guard- I have also been a part of the Winter Guard for the past four years. this group unlike Color Guard in Marching Band is more specific to each person, and makes you focus on exactly what you are doing and helped me learn how to look closer at something and fix all the small problems.

  • Band- I have been in band for the past 7 years. for the past four years our band has qualified for state festival. this group has taught me how to be organized with my time, and work with others as a team.

  • National Honor Society- I have been in the National Honor society for my junior and senior years. it has given more opportunities to give back to the community by doing more volunteer work.

  • Gymnastics- in my younger years I did Gymnastics for 9 years. I did it from when I was four to thirteen. this experience taught me from a young age how to trust myself with trying new things that may scare me. It also taught me to challenge myself from a young age and push myself to be better every day.

  • Volunteer Work- I have volunteered at many places, but my favorite is working at my old Elementary School for field day, where at the end of the year all the kids go outside and play fun games to celebrate the year. I have done this from the time that I was in sixth grade until my senior year of high school.

As a dream job, I would love to be a Chemical Engineer. Chemical engineers work with other forms of engineering to use a chemical and biological approach to engineering. The average salary for a Chemical Engineer is around $98,340 per year. To get this job I will need to get a bachelors, or masters degree. I would like to work for a makeup brand, or related cosmetic field. Many duties of a chemical engineer include, finding the problems, analyzing possible solutions, and applying information to fix the problem. with working in the cosmetic field having a basic knowledge about makeup, and what the customers would like in the products.

What are your weaknesses?

I have always been a quiet person, and in some ways this can be a weakness. I sometimes have a hard time making friends, or talking to new people. When I have a specific goal that I have to accomplish with a group of people it will be the opposite and I am motivated to get the work done. This helps me get work done faster when I'm with new people which is a benefit to being a quiet person.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years I can see myself graduated from college and working at a good job that could support me for the future. I can see that I have a good place to live that I won't have to move from for a while. I also can see that I am still surrounding myself with a good group of friends that are both supportive and can help me become a better person.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

One accomplishment that I am most proud of is that I got into the Grand Valley Honors college. This was a big accomplishment that came from my high GPA, and my qualities in leadership, and academics. I am proud of this, because this can help me further my career by surrounding myself with people like myself, and helping me grow as a person academically.

What was your biggest failure?

My biggest failure was in a class where I pushed myself too far. I took AP Chemistry which is a hard class to do good in even though I was good at chemistry and loved it the year before. This was the first hard class that I had ever taken, and it scared me when I was trying as hard as I possibly could and was still getting a B+ in the class. Many people would not consider this as a failure, but to me it was a shock that I could no longer just expect to get an A in every class because I was doing the work. This class has taught me how to work hard, and not let myself get stressed out over small things like a test grade.

What kind of work do you enjoy the most?

The work that I enjoy is when I can work independently in a quiet room and ask others for help when needed. When doing this I do not feel pressured to work faster than  necessary which will limit mistakes. When working independently I can get a lot done which is the best conditions to do work for me. When working like this my favorite kind of work is anything to do with mathematics because that is the area where I feel most confident in my abilities.

How do you deal with conflict?

When I deal with conflict I am not a confrontational person so I never end up getting that mad at someone. This helps me by stepping back from the situation and thinking about what I really should do. Taking a step back also helps me by having me look at both viewpoints and seeing if it is my fault so I can go back and apologize.

Tell me about a time when you disagreed with your boss/supervisor?

One time when I disagreed with someone in charge was during marching band. I am the section leader of the color guard, and it was a cold rainy day where we had to go outside to work on our show. Our director brought out the big raincoats for the band, but he said that the color guard will not need them. As the section leader I did not want to let my section go out without raincoats where we could possibly get sick. I decided that the best option would be for us to grab our raincoats anyway, and ask again and explain how we didn't want to sit in the cold rain and possibly get sick. I explained the situation to the director and he understood our situation, and let us wear them for the rest of practice.

How do you handle pressure/stress?

Through my early years of high school I did not have to deal with much stress, because I was taking classes that did not challenge me as much, and that did not stress me out from not knowing the material. As I have grown so have the classes that I have taken, which has led to an increase in my stress and the pressure I put on myself. Over the past two years I have gained so many friends who can help me with my stress and have helped me realize that I can do some things that i'm scared of. My friends have helped me with my hard classes and helped me learn how to teach myself when I need help with a class. Another way that I handle stress is from when homework or a class gets me stressed I will take a break and clean my room to clear my head and help me refocus on the topic that is stressing me out.

What are your pet peeves?

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone starts their work and does not complete it. I am somewhat of a perfectionist in a way where I have to finish one part before I go on to the next. This helps me get stuff done, because if I write out a to do list it helps me to go down the list and cross off what I get done. This method works for me, but when people leave multiple things half done it makes me annoyed because, then they have more things to think about and will have to keep stopping and starting each new thing you do.

Tell me about a time that you participated in a team, what was your role?

Through high school I was a part of the color guard in the marching band. This is a very team based group, because if one person does something wrong it can mess up everyone. My role in this group was the section leader for three years. As the section leader it was my job to keep the team together and help any younger members who need help or are stressed about the fact that they can not do the work they need to. This group has helped me learn how to be a leader, and the balance between being strict and empathetic.
